First United Methodist Church
Historically a white congregation. Changed of location twice before establishing in our current church in Canal St in 1960
We are a community committed to radical acceptance and love, where differences are celebrated, and all are welcomed.
Our mission is to create a space where you can learn that you are loved, and you can learn the ways of love.
More than Charity we do Justice Work. Charity is good and necessary, but the ministry of justice puts a greater calling on us to pick-up our cross and employ the power of Life in Christ and confront the principalities and the power structures that cause disenfranchisement of the least.
First United Methodist Church
Historically a white congregation. Changed of location twice before establishing in our current church in Canal St in 1960
Grace United Methodist Church
Historically black congregation. Their sanctuary suffered damages from Hurricane Betsy 1965 and Hurricane Katrina 2005.
A Higher Calling
The two different churches with distinct communities had never considered merging until they received this question:
"In this moment, do you believe we can do more for our city as one body of Christ, more than we could ever do as two bodies one long mile apart?"
First Grace United Methodist Church
First UMC and Grace UMC in an act of faith, trusting in God's guidance, merged to create a new congregation.
First Grace began with 60 members in 2007, and today we have more than 300 active members.
