CSN – Message from the Pastor regarding 9 AM Spanish Worship

Dear Members and Friends of First Grace,
On Sunday, August 12, members of our 9 AM Spanish Speaking Worship Service will join the 11:10 AM English Worship Service indefinitely.
About eight weeks ago, the Spanish speaking members began a discernment process with me regarding the future of the 9 AM Spanish Worship. During those eight weeks, and for various difficult reasons, more than half the worshipping congregation moved to South Carolina, Colorado, Virginia and Mexico. Of the remaining 10 or so adults and children, a decision was made to begin worshipping with 11:10 AM English Worship Service. Wow.
“We have one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who rules and works through all and is present to all. Everything you are and think and do is permeated with Oneness…In Christ’s body we’re all connected to each other.” Ephesians 4.4-7; 25. Paul’s encounter with Christ and his faith made him courageously wild at heart and purpose. We should be too.
The vision for our 11:10 AM Worship is that we will continue being an English Worship experience that is culturally aware and sensitive. Matt and Virginia Candler and their three children are all bilingual and will lead the Bienvenidos Ministry to Spanish Speakers. Bienvenidos (Welcome) will provide electronic translation and a bilingual “Worship Friend” for Spanish speakers. You will have the opportunity to join this ministry at Sunday’s 4.10 Connection Fair after worship. In addition, one of the two songs during communion will be in Spanish, and the communion rite will reflect some Spanish language.
As you might expect, it is a lot to ask a Spanish speaker to worship in an English speaking setting. This decision was not made haphazardly, but thoughtfully. Just as it is for you, First Grace is our Spanish Speakers church home. They want to give this a go through December and then have another time of discernment.
I am so grateful for First Grace and your bold trust in the Gospel. I will see you Sunday at 11:10 with your open minds and wild hearts.
Until then, be good to yourself and hasta la vista,
Pastor Shawn

Scripture: Jeremiah 18:1-6

1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: “Come, go down to the potter’s house, and there I will let you hear my words.” So I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was working at his wheel. The vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter’s hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as seemed good to him.
Then the word of the Lord came to me: Can I not do with you, O house of Israel, just as this potter has done? says the Lord. Just like the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel.

1 After this Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, also called the Sea of Tiberias.2 A large crowd kept following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing for the sick. 3 Jesus went up the mountain and sat down there with his disciples. 4 Now the Passover, the festival of the Jews, was near. 5 When he looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, “Six months’ wages would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little.” 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, 9 “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are they among so many people?” 10 Jesus said, “Make the people sit down.” Now there was a great deal of grass in the place; so they sat down, about five thousand in all.

11 Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 When they were satisfied, he told his disciples, “Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost.” 13 So they gathered them up, and from the fragments of the five barley loaves, left by those who had eaten, they filled twelve baskets. 14 When the people saw the sign that he had done, they began to say, “This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the

Matthew 6:25-34

  1. “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?
  2. Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
  3. Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?
  4. “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin;
  5. and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
  6. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
  7. “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’
  8. For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
  9. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
  10. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
