Hello First Grace family!
This is your chance to become a Mardi Gras superhero!!

YLC Recycles and ARC of Greater New Orleans are piloting an exciting initiative aimed at reducing waste during 2 days of Mardi Gras parades in 2018. AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

This year on February 3rd and 11th a team of volunteers will distribute 2 types of labeled recycling bags to the public before and during the day parades. One bag will be for cans and plastic bottles and the other for Mardi Gras throws. Members of the public who accept the bags with our instructions will be asked to turn them in at one of 6 stations in the pilot area or leave them on the route for pickup by our trucks and volunteers following the Krewe of Freret and Krewe of Thoth.

We need YOU to be a Mardi Gras Superhero — one who saves our storm drains from the perils of unwanted beads and our landfills from excess trash. The Mardi Gras Recycling group is recruiting 100 volunteers to be a part of history. Sign up for a shift below to be stationed in a tent or pass out bags, and whether this is your first Mardi Gras in New Orleans or you’re a seasoned pro WE WANT YOU! Don’t miss your opportunity to be a part of the history making team that made Mardi Gras in New Orleans even better!

Tree Giveaway First Grace is hosting a tree giveaway on Saturday, January 20, 2018 from 9 am until 12 noon. The event is presented by NOLA Tree Project with the sponsorship of Energy and the Apache Foundation. One free tree will be available to persons attending with additional trees at $15 each. There will be 500 trees of 30 different varieties. FGUMC Green Team is hosting this event. For more information go to nolatreeproject.org

Green Tip Let’s get back to some tips about organizing and decluttering the house for the new year. Are all those hotel-size lotions, soaps and shampoos from your last vacation still taking up space? The Tuesday Meal and Odyssey House, which aids drug and alcohol addicts in their recovery, needs unused travel-size toiletry items, which also can include mouthwash and toothpaste. Make sure items are alcohol free.

 Terence Blanchard the New Orleans-born and -based artist has traveled many paths musically composing over 50 soundtracks and even, in 2013, debuting Champion: An Opera in Jazz. Champion is the true story of a gay boxer in the 1960s, welterweight world champion Emile Griffith, and his fateful fights with rival Benny Paret.

He began playing piano by the age of five, switched to trumpet three years later, and played alongside childhood friend Marsalis in summer band camps. While in high school, he took extracurricular classes at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts with Roger Dickerson and Ellis Marsalis. From 1980 to 1982, Blanchard studied under Paul Jeffrey and Bill Fielder at Rutgers University in New Jersey while touring with Lionel Hampton’s orchestra. In 1982 Blanchard replaced Wynton Marsalis under his recommendation in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, working in that band up to 1986 as lead soloist and musical director. He then co-led a prominent quintet with saxophonist Donald Harrison, recording seven albums for the Concord, Columbia, and Evidence record labels in five years, including a stirring in-concert tribute to the Eric Dolphy/Booker Little ensemble. “Growing up I was listening to the Head Hunters and Weather Report, which had a strong effect on me. I always listened to groove-based music-Jimi Hendrix, Parliament Funkadelic and then later listening to Prince and D’Angelo and later what [jazz trumpeter] Russell Gunn was doing.”

It’s time to recycle your Christmas tree!
Orleans Parish:  Those residents served by Richard’s Disposal (most of the city) place your tree curbside before 5am your regularly scheduled second collection day the week of Jan 11 and Jan 13.
Those served by Empire Services (French Quarter and Downtown Development District) should place theirs curbside before 4 am on Thurs, Jan 11.
Jefferson Parish:  Place trees curbside on Jan 10. Trucks will make one pass through each neighborhood between Jan 11 and Jan 13.
Remember to remove ALL ornaments, tinsel, stands, lights. Only natural, unlocked trees accepted.

Green Tip
Green Tip Happy New Year! If you want to get organized and de-clutter this year, some tips to help will be listed for the next several weeks. Linen closet:  if you are replacing towels, bath rugs or blankets, consider donating your old ones to area animal rescues. These groups can use old sheets, pet beds and other pet gear. The LA SPCA can use bedding of any kind and even old or mismatched socks. (These are used to make cat toys!) They also request bags of unopened pet food and kitty litter either opened or unopened. Tennis balls, heating pads, newspaper and plastic bags are also needed. Contact the SPCA at 504-368-5191. They are located at 1700 Mardi Gras Blvd on the West Bank. The Tuesday Community meal will also accept kitchen towels.
